At a Costco food court, $1.50 buys a hot dog and a soda. The same company charges $65 a year for a basic U.S. membership before you can shop the warehouse. Pay first, then come shopping.
That proposition brought Costco $5.907 billion in worldwide membership fee revenue in fiscal 2026, up 11%, according to its annual report. That is revenue, not profit, and behind it sits a real business to run: warehouses, employees and every other cost of keeping the promise. Follow the shopping trip from the food court to the decision that matters most: whether you pay for another year.
A year to prove the value
Costco says the fee helps offset operating costs so it can price merchandise lower. The member pays today for value expected over the coming year. That is the deal Costco has to keep proving, and it creates a vulnerability: if prices stop feeling special, the member can start questioning the fee itself.
The warehouse in the video, a store in The Villages, Florida, filmed in 2025, makes the pitch easy to feel. The shelves are huge, the packages are huge, and a grocery run can turn into a conversation about a new sofa.
The enormous store with fewer choices
It feels like Costco sells everything. Its annual report says a core warehouse carries fewer than 4,000 active items, significantly less than other broadline retailers, while the website averages 9,000 to 11,000. Costco seeks to limit most items to fast-selling models, sizes and colors. The choice has been edited before you arrive.
Fewer versions of a product let Costco concentrate its orders into larger quantities, which supports its buying power. Members accept some of those selection decisions in exchange for the value they expect. The catch: if your preferred version is missing, a bigger package of something else may be no bargain to you. The size of the building and the number of choices are different things.
The cardboard is doing a job
The boxes are still on the floor, products sit on pallets and more inventory is stacked overhead. Costco’s annual report says merchandise is generally stored on racks above the sales floor and displayed on pallets containing large quantities, reducing the labor required. A low price has to be supported by the way the store works, and the plain displays are part of that operation.
Does the bargain work for you?
The savings inside Costco’s business and the savings inside your household are different calculations. A huge pack helps only if you use it. If half ends up in the trash, the bargain changes, and an unplanned purchase still costs money even when it is a good deal.
An illustration, not Costco’s average saving: if you genuinely save $5 per visit compared with what you would otherwise buy, 13 visits cover a $65 fee. Your result depends on what you buy, what you use and the alternatives near you. The price tag cannot answer those questions for you.
The price that changed
The hot dog and soda price goes back to 1985, according to Costco’s historical highlights. The membership price has moved. On September 1, 2024, Costco raised the basic U.S. Gold Star fee from $60 to $65, and the Executive fee from $120 to $130.
A company can protect one famous price while asking more for the annual relationship. That makes renewal more demanding, because the member needs enough reasons across the whole trip to keep saying yes. A $1.50 lunch is easy to remember. A year’s worth of value is a much bigger promise.
The renewal decision
At the end of fiscal 2026, Costco reported a renewal rate of 92.3% in the U.S. and Canada and 89.8% worldwide. It is a trailing calculation covering renewals seven to eighteen months before the reporting date. It shows how many members stayed. It does not say why, and it does not show that the hot dog had anything to do with it.
Costco credits the 11% rise in membership fee revenue to new sign-ups, the fee increase and upgrades to Executive membership. The fee makes next year’s experience part of the product. Costco is selling a reason to return, the same repeat relationship retailers worry about losing when AI assistants become the doorway to the store.
Back to the hot dog
A hot dog and a soda for $1.50 is a promise you can remember without doing any math. For the business, the interesting part is everything required to keep a promise like that believable, year after year. For a shopper, the question is whether the rest of the cart deserves the same confidence.
Does your membership pay for itself?

The renewal rate is Costco’s own trailing measure and does not explain why members renew. The item count uses the annual report’s figure of fewer than 4,000 active items per warehouse.
